Frequently asked questions
What is scar camouflage?
Scar camouflage is a type of skin pigmentation that allows you to hide the aesthetic imperfections of damaged skin resulting from burns, various injuries, surgery, and so on. The procedure is a layer-by-layer application of special medical dermatological pigments with the use of tattoo equipment with different needles, selected individually to your skin’s color.
What type of scars can you camouflage?
We’ve had experience working with different types of scars, including smooth and flat, as well as atrophic and hypertrophic scars. Before your procedure we may recommend a resurfacing treatment to help minimize scarring. You’ll need to wait at least 6 months from the time of your surgery to schedule an appointment with us. We work with white, nude, reddish, and brown scars.
What are the steps involved in improving scar appearance?
The procedure involves three stages: primary, correction and secondary correction. To achieve maximum results, several corrections are needed. Immediately after camouflage there may be a slight local swelling and redness; these phenomena are temporary. The final result can be assessed after the completion of the rehabilitation period (1-1.5 months). The aesthetic effect lasts up to 2-5 years.
How do I know what type of scar I have?
Flat scars are usually pink or red, and they become less noticeable as they heal. Over time, flat scars may become lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.
Atrophic scars are sunken, rounded pits or indentations in the skin. They result from chickenpox or acne and develop most often on the face. As we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity which can make atrophic scars more noticeable.
Hypertrophic scars are raised, and you can feel them when you run your finger over them. They may become smaller over time, but they never flatten out completely. Unlike keloids, hypertrophic scars don’t grow or spread beyond the wounded area.
Stretch marks are caused when the connective tissue under the skin is damaged by rapid expansion or shrinkage. The most common places to get stretch marks are on the breasts, stomach, thighs and upper arms. Stretch marks are a form of scarring characterized by an atrophy appearance. Learn More
Keloids are raised scars that often spread beyond the original wound site. Keloids can grow large and limit body movement. This type of scars is not suitable for camouflage.
What conditions would prevent me from having this procedure?
People with certain medical conditions should not get tattoos. These include:
· Skin diseases, infection in the treatment area
· Tendency to form keloid scars
· Herpes in the acute stage
· Mechanical damage to the skin (abrasions, bruises, cuts, etc.) at the site of the procedure
· Hematological diseases (hemophilia and other forms of coagulopathies)
· The presence of neoplasms of unknown etiology, cancer, etc.
How does the scar camouflage procedure look like?
At our first meeting, we’ll get to know each other and answer any questions you have. We’ll also show you some examples of our work so that you’ll have a better idea of the kind of results you can expect from us. Once we’ve agreed on a plan for your camouflage, we’ll start the procedure by cleaning the area with an antiseptic solution. Then we apply some local anesthetic cream to numb the skin in order to reduce any discomfort during the procedure. After checking your numbness level, we’ll start filling in your scar with pigments. At the end of the micropigmentation process, you will be pleasantly surprised by how well it blends into your skin. The pigment gradually fades over time. But its original color is preserved.
Will the scar or stretch mark look natural?
We use only special pigments for paramedical camouflage. These pigments are designed to blend in with the natural tone of healthy skin. Scars are structurally different than healthy skin, but they can be made to look more normal by choosing a pigment that matches the surrounding skin. Scars also tend to shrink and improve in appearance over the first month after the procedure.
What is scar micropigmentation?
Scar micropigmentation is a specialized paramedical tattooing technique designed to camouflage scars by implanting pigment into the upper layer of the skin. It effectively reduces the appearance of scars, making them blend seamlessly with the surrounding skin tone.
Who can benefit from scar micropigmentation?
This treatment is beneficial for individuals looking to minimize the visual impact of various types of scars, including surgical scars, post-traumatic scars, hair transplantation scars, post-acne scars, and vertical lip lines.
Who is a good candidate for scar micropigmentation?
Good candidates for scar micropigmentation include individuals looking for a non-invasive option to camouflage their scars, who have stable scars (not prone to frequent changes in appearance), and who do not have active skin diseases or infections in the targeted area. People who have realistic expectations about the outcome and understand that the goal is improvement, not perfection, are ideal candidates. A professional consultation can help determine if scar micropigmentation is the right choice for your specific scar type and skin condition.
How does the micropigmentation process work
The process involves a consultation to assess the scar and skin tone, followed by the selection of suitable pigment matched to your skin. The pigment is then carefully applied to the scarred area using specialized equipment, with techniques tailored to achieve the most natural-looking results.
Is scar micropigmentation painful?
Discomfort levels vary among individuals; however, most clients experience minimal pain. Topical anesthetics can be applied before the procedure to minimize discomfort.
How long does the procedure take?
The duration depends on the size and complexity of the scar. On average, the procedure can take between 1 to 3 hours.
What is the healing process like?
Initial healing typically takes about 7 to 14 days. Clients may experience slight redness, swelling, and peeling during this time. A comprehensive aftercare plan will be provided to ensure optimal healing and pigment retention.
How long do the results last?
While scar micropigmentation can be long-lasting, factors such as sun exposure, skin type, and overall health can influence its longevity. Periodic touch-ups may be recommended to maintain the best results.
Is there any downtime?
There is minimal to no downtime required. Most clients can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, with some aftercare instructions to follow.
How do I choose the right specialist?
Ensure that your specialist has extensive experience in paramedical tattooing and cosmetic dermatology. Look for a portfolio of their work, read client testimonials, and consider their training and background in cosmetic procedures.
Can scar micropigmentation be removed?
Yes, it can be lightened or removed using laser treatments or other removal techniques, but it’s essential to discuss your options with a qualified professional. What is the difference between scar micropigmentation and laser scar removal?
Scar micropigmentation is a non-invasive cosmetic technique where natural or synthetic pigments are implanted into the scar tissue, effectively camouflaging the scar to blend with the surrounding skin tone. On the other hand, laser scar removal is a more invasive procedure that uses focused light therapy to remove or reduce scar tissue, aiming to restore the skin to its pre-injured state. Micropigmentation works by adding color, while laser removal focuses on subtracting or diminishing scar appearance.
Is scar micropigmentation safer than laser removal?
Yes, scar micropigmentation is generally considered safer than laser removal for several reasons. It is a minimally invasive technique with a very low risk of complications, such as infection or adverse reactions, when performed by a trained professional. Since it doesn’t involve the removal of skin layers, as in laser treatments, there’s less risk to the skin’s overall integrity and less downtime. Furthermore, micropigmentation can be more easily controlled and adjusted to match the skin tone accurately, minimizing the risk of pigmentary changes associated with laser procedures.
Can scar micropigmentation provide better results than laser scar removal?
The results from scar micropigmentation can often be more visually appealing and immediate compared to laser scar removal, particularly for individuals with skin tones that are more prone to pigmentation changes or laser-induced scars. Micropigmentation offers a customizable solution that can more precisely match the skin’s natural color and texture, providing a seamless and natural appearance. While laser treatment may still be recommended for certain types of scars, micropigmentation provides an effective option for those seeking an alternative that carries fewer risks and less downtime.
Can I undergo scar micropigmentation if I have keloid scars?
Keloid scars are a specific type of scar formation characterized by an overgrowth of dense, fibrous tissue that extends beyond the original boundaries of the wound. Because keloid scars are raised and continue to grow over time, they are generally not considered suitable for micropigmentation. The procedure involves implanting pigment into the skin, and there is a risk that further injury to keloid-prone skin could stimulate more keloid formation.
Why is micropigmentation not recommended for keloid scars?
Micropigmentation involves the use of needles to implant pigment into the skin’s dermal layer. This process can potentially trigger the skin’s healing response, leading to further excessive scar tissue formation in those who are prone to keloids. Since keloids may also vary in texture and are often raised significantly above the rest of the skin, achieving a uniform appearance with micropigmentation would be particularly challenging and might not provide the desired cosmetic results.
What are the alternatives to micropigmentation for keloid scars?
For managing keloid scars, treatments that do not involve breaking the skin might be preferable. These can include silicone gel sheets and creams, corticosteroid injections, or cryotherapy, which can help flatten and soften the keloid scars without the risk of exacerbating them. Laser therapy and surgical removal are other options, although they also carry a risk of triggering further keloid formation and should only be considered under careful medical guidance.
